Makomanai Park

Makomanai Park

Makomanai Park (真駒内公園) is a city park in Minami-ku, Sapporo, Hokkaido, Japan. It is home to attractions such as Makomanai Open Stadium, Makomanai Ice Arena and the Sapporo Salmon Museum. It also contains a small gymnasium, restaurant and a shop.

Makomanai Park

Makomanai Park is a large city park in Sapporo's Minami-ku ward, built around several sports facilities rather than gardens or scenery. The main draws are Makomanai Open Stadium and the Makomanai Ice Arena, both used for sporting events, plus the Sapporo Salmon Museum, which covers the salmon that return to Hokkaido's rivers. There's also a small gymnasium, a restaurant, and a shop on site. It suits travellers with a specific interest in one of these facilities more than those looking for a general park stroll.

Getting there

The park is served by Makomanai Station on the Sapporo Municipal Subway Namboku Line, which connects directly to Odori and Susukino in the city centre. The ride from central Sapporo takes roughly 15-20 minutes, with a short walk from the station to the park grounds.

How much time to allow

A visit to the Salmon Museum alone takes about 30-45 minutes. If you're attending an event at the stadium or ice arena, plan around that schedule separately, as those are the main reason most visitors come.

When to go

Crowds at the park itself are generally light outside of scheduled sporting events or competitions at the stadium and ice arena, which can draw larger numbers of visitors and fill nearby parking and transit. Check what's on before you go if you want a quieter visit.

Combine with

  • Makomanai River (0.3km) and Kitanosawa River (0.5km) are both close enough to add as a short walk before or after the park.
  • Mount Tenjin (2.6km) and Mount Moiwa (3.1km) are further out and better suited to a separate outing if you're interested in hiking or viewpoints over the city.
