Overview

Bongeunsa is a historic Buddhist temple founded during the Silla dynasty, situated at the base of Mount Sudo in Gangnam. The site features traditional prayer halls, stone pagodas, and a large standing Maitreya Buddha statue. Travelers visit to see traditional Korean Buddhist architecture and experience quiet temple grounds in the center of the city.

Getting There

From central Seoul, take the subway to Bongeunsa Station (Line 9) or Samseong Station (Line 2). The trip takes approximately 35 to 45 minutes. The main entrance sits directly outside Bongeunsa Station Exit 1.

Time to Allow

Allow 45 minutes to 1.5 hours to walk through the central courtyard, view the shrines, and explore the hillside path.

When to Visit

Early mornings offer the calmest atmosphere before foot traffic increases. Weekends and midday hours are noticeably busier. Expect large crowds during major Buddhist celebrations such as Buddha's Birthday in spring.
