Itaewon

Itaewon is a multicultural neighborhood in Seoul known for its high concentration of foreign residents and its history as a hub for the U.S. military. Travelers visit this area to experience a diverse range of international cuisines, global retail shops, and an exotic streetscape that differs from other districts in the city. It also houses the Seoul Central Mosque and various foreign embassies.

Getting There

The neighborhood is accessible from the city center via the Seoul Metropolitan Subway. Using Line 6 to Itaewon Station is the most direct method. Depending on your starting point in central Seoul, the journey typically takes between 20 and 40 minutes.

Time Allocation

Allow 3 to 5 hours to explore the main streets, visit the various shops, and have a meal. Those interested in exploring the smaller side alleys and uphill residential areas may require a full day.

When to Visit

The area is active throughout the day, but the atmosphere shifts in the evening as dining and nightlife venues become more prominent. It gets crowded on weekends and Friday nights. There are no specific seasonal restrictions, though autumn and spring offer the most temperate weather for walking.

Nearby Attractions

Because of its central location, this district can be combined with several other sites:

  • Seoul Central Mosque: 0.9km
  • Namsan: 1.1km
  • War Memorial of Korea: 1.4km
  • National Theater of Korea: 1.6km
