Overview

Xiaotaoyuan Mosque is an active place of worship located in Shanghai's Huangpu District. Formerly known as the West Mosque, it is the city's largest Islamic mosque and serves as a notable example of Islamic architecture integrated into an urban Chinese neighborhood. Travellers visit to view its distinctive domes, minarets, and rectangular prayer hall, as well as to observe the religious heritage of the local Hui Muslim community.

Getting There

The site is situated just south of the historic city centre. From People's Square or central Shanghai, the journey takes roughly 15 to 20 minutes by metro or taxi. Several central transit lines stop within walking distance.

Plan to spend approximately 30 to 45 minutes on site to view the architecture and exterior courtyards.

When to Visit

Weekday mornings and early afternoons offer the quietest visit. The mosque gets noticeably crowded during Friday congregational prayers around midday. As with any religious site, visitors should dress respectfully with covered shoulders and knees.
