Ta Keo
Overview
Ta Keo is a temple-mountain within Cambodia's Angkor complex, built by the Khmer Empire. It is notable for its stepped pyramid design and as one of the first monuments in the region constructed entirely of sandstone. Work on the temple was halted before decorative carving was finished, leaving the massive stone blocks largely unadorned. Travellers visit to see its unfinished architectural style and climb the central terraces.
Getting There
The site is located approximately 12 to 14 kilometres north of downtown Siem Reap. Travel by tuk-tuk or car from the city centre typically takes 20 to 30 minutes along the main access roads.
Time to Allow
Plan for 45 to 60 minutes. Climbing the narrow, steep stone steps up to the top level requires careful footing and takes up most of the visit.
When to Go
Arrive in the early morning or late afternoon to avoid direct sun, as the elevated stone levels have no shade. The stairs become crowded around midday when tour groups arrive. The dry season from November to April offers dry surfaces for climbing, though overall visitor traffic across the park is higher during these months.
