Armenian Church of Saint Gregory the Illuminator

This is the oldest surviving Christian church building in Singapore, completed in 1835 and consecrated the following year. It was built for the city's small Armenian merchant community as a parish of the Armenian Apostolic Church, an Oriental Orthodox denomination. Although the last resident Armenian priest left in the late 1930s, Armenian and Oriental Orthodox services are still held there. Visitors come mainly for the compact neoclassical building itself, its surrounding garden, and the adjoining memorial cemetery, which together offer a quiet contrast to the museums and gallery nearby. It was designated a national monument in 1973.

Getting there

The church sits on Hill Street in the Museum Planning Area, within Singapore's Central Area. From the downtown core (e.g. Raffles Place or Marina Bay), it's roughly a 15-20 minute walk, or a shorter taxi/ride-hail trip of about 5-10 minutes depending on traffic. City Hall and Bras Basah MRT stations are both within easy walking distance.

How much time to allow

Because the church and grounds are small, 20-30 minutes is usually enough to look around the exterior, garden, and cemetery.

When to go

Visit earlier in the day to avoid the midday heat, since most of the grounds are outdoors. This is a low-key site rather than a major tourist draw, so it generally doesn't get crowded, though it's worth being mindful that it remains an active place of worship.
