The Jurong Lake Gardens are the three interconnected gardens located in and around Jurong Lake in western Singapore, they being the Chinese, Japanese, and Lakeside gardens.
Jurong Lake Gardens' Japanese Garden
The Japanese Garden is one of three linked gardens around Jurong Lake in western Singapore, alongside a Chinese Garden and the Lakeside Garden. It's a landscaped park built around water, stone arrangements, and pruned greenery in a Japanese style, making it a quieter stop than most Singapore attractions — good for a slow walk rather than a checklist of sights. Bridges connect small islets across ponds, and paths loop through the grounds at an easy pace.
Getting there
From the city centre, take the MRT to Chinese Garden or Lakeside station on the East-West Line, then walk to the gardens. The full journey typically takes around 40-45 minutes from downtown Singapore.
How long to spend
An hour or two is enough to walk through the Japanese Garden itself. If combining it with the neighbouring Chinese Garden, allow closer to half a day.
When to go
Early morning or late afternoon avoids the midday heat, which can make extended walking uncomfortable given the limited shade in parts of the garden. Weekends tend to draw more local visitors and families than weekdays.
Combine with
- Chinese Garden — directly adjacent, part of the same Jurong Lake Gardens complex, and the most natural pairing for a single visit.
- Jurong Bird Park (3.1km) — a short trip away, worth considering if travelling with children.
- Singapore Botanic Gardens (9.8km) and Bukit Timah Nature Reserve (9.6km) — both further east, better suited to a separate day given the distance.
Flights into the city arrive at Changi International Airport (SIN), on the opposite side of Singapore from Jurong Lake Gardens.
