Overview

The Saint George Rotunda Church is a red-brick circular structure in central Sofia, recognized as the city's oldest building. Built in the early 4th century as a Roman bathhouse within the walls of ancient Serdica, it was later converted into a church belonging to the Bulgarian Orthodox Church. Travelers visit to examine its early Roman masonry and interior frescoes.

Getting There

Located in the city centre courtyard behind the Presidency, the site is accessible on foot within a two- to five-minute walk from the central Serdika area.

Time to Allow

Allow 20 to 30 minutes. The interior is compact, leaving ample time to see the dome frescoes and the excavated Roman ruins outside.

When to Visit

Mornings offer a quieter visit before walking tours arrive. Daytime provides the best light to view the brickwork. Because it remains an active place of worship, avoid visits during scheduled church services.
