Overview

The Croatian Maritime Museum occupies a 19th-century building situated within the 17th-century Gripe Fortress. Opened in 1997, it preserves and presents collections relating to the region's naval, commercial, and seafaring history along the Adriatic coast. Travellers visit to examine historic navigational equipment, maritime artifacts, and ship models while exploring the preserved bastion grounds.

Getting There

The site is located on a slight hill east of the city centre. Walking from Diocletian's Palace or the central waterfront takes approximately 10 to 15 minutes through residential streets.

Plan for 1 to 1.5 hours to tour the indoor galleries and walk around the fortress perimeter.

When to Visit

Mornings and late afternoons are the most practical times to visit to avoid the midday heat, especially during the summer uphill walk. The venue generally sees low to moderate foot traffic and does not suffer from the heavy crowds found inside the historic core.
