What It Is

Neustadt is an urban district adjoining Strasbourg's old city, added to the UNESCO World Heritage list in 2017. Developed in the late 19th century, its streets blend French urban design with German architecture. Travellers visit to see its wide boulevards, civic monuments, and period residential buildings.

Getting There

The district lies directly north of the historic centre. Walking from central locations like Place Kléber takes about 10 to 15 minutes. Trams also reach the area's main square in roughly 5 minutes.

Time to Allow

Allow 1.5 to 2 hours to walk the main avenues and view the architecture.

When to Visit

Daylight hours are best for viewing building facades and public gardens. As an administrative and residential area, it sees regular local foot traffic during weekday work hours and is quieter on weekends.

Nearby Attractions

The district can easily be combined with several neighbouring sights:

  • Place de la République (0km) – The primary square anchoring the area.
  • Palais du Rhin (0.1km) – A historic palace situated on the main square.
  • Strasbourg Opera House (0.2km) – Located across the canal toward the old city.
  • Saint-Pierre-le-Jeune Catholic Church (0.4km) – Situated a short walk to the west.
