Getting Around Sur

Sur is a spread-out coastal city where the primary attractions—the lighthouse, the dhow factory, and the shoreline—are not within easy walking distance of one another. Efficient movement depends almost entirely on motorized transport.

Primary Modes of Transport

• Rental Cars: This is the most effective option. A private vehicle allows for flexible trips to the nearby Ras Al Hadd turtle reserve and the lighthouse without relying on scheduled services.
• Taxis: Readily available for short hops within the city center. They are ideal for those who do not wish to drive on Oman's highways but are less efficient for multi-stop sightseeing tours.
• Walking: Only recommended for short strolls along the waterfront or within the immediate vicinity of the old town.

From Muscat International Airport (MCT) to Sur

As Sur does not have its own commercial airport, visitors arrive via Muscat. The journey takes several hours across the southeastern region.

• Private Rental/Car: Lowest effort and highest flexibility. It offers the fastest door-to-door transit.
• Intercity Taxi/Private Hire: Moderate effort. More expensive than renting but removes the stress of navigating unfamiliar roads.
