How to visit Sur, Oman for the first time

City Layout and Districts
Sur is a linear coastal city where life is oriented toward the Gulf of Oman. To navigate it, think of the city in three primary zones:
- The Old Town: The historic heart where traditional architecture prevails. This is the primary area for cultural sightseeing and visiting the traditional shipyards.
- The Waterfront/Corniche: The strip along the shore, stretching toward the lighthouse. This is the main pedestrian zone for strolling and viewing the coastline.
- The Modern Center: Located further inland, this area contains the majority of commercial services, supermarkets, and administrative offices.
- Priority One: Visit the traditional dhow building yards to see how wooden ships are still crafted by hand.
- Priority Two: Walk the Corniche toward the Sur Lighthouse for panoramic views of the Gulf.
- Priority Three: Explore the narrow alleys of the Old Town.
- Secondary: If time permits, venture outside the city limits to the nearby Ras Al Jinz Turtle Reserve.
Arrival and Local Transport
The gateway to Sur is Muscat International Airport (MCT). Since Sur is located several hours southeast of the capital, the most reliable way to reach the city is by renting a car or hiring a private driver. Public transport options between cities are limited.
Once inside Sur, the city is small enough that many central sites are reachable by short taxi rides. However, having your own vehicle is highly recommended if you plan to visit the surrounding nature reserves or the lighthouse, as these are spread out along the coast.
Common First-Timer Mistakes
Visitors often mistake Sur for a fast-paced tourist hub. It is a quiet, slow-paced coastal town. Do not expect a high density of English-speaking tour guides on every corner; instead, rely on offline maps and basic local etiquette.
Another common error is spending too much time in the modern center. The true character of Sur lies in the Old Town and the shoreline. Prioritize the periphery of the city over the commercial core.
