Overview

The 921 Earthquake Museum of Taiwan preserves the physical fault line and collapsed school buildings from the 1999 earthquake in Taichung. Built directly on the damaged grounds of a former middle school, it provides a direct look at the ground displacement that occurred along the fault and houses educational exhibits on disaster preparedness and seismology.

Getting There

The site is located in Wufeng District, south of central Taichung. From Taichung Station, local city buses take approximately 45 to 60 minutes depending on traffic. A taxi ride from the city center takes about 30 minutes.

Time to Allow

Plan to spend 2 to 3 hours on site to walk along the outdoor fault display, examine the preserved ruins, and view the indoor galleries.

When to Go

Visiting in the morning is advisable to walk along the outdoor sections before midday temperatures rise. Expect larger crowds on weekends and during school field trips; weekdays offer a quieter visit.
