Freedom Square
Overview
Freedom Square is a spacious plaza at the southern edge of Tallinn's Old Town. It serves as a civic gathering place for national events, ceremonies, and concerts. Travellers visit to see key landmarks, including the War of Independence Victory Column, and to use the pedestrian space as an entryway to the historic district.
Getting There
The square sits directly adjacent to central Tallinn. Walking from the city centre takes 5 to 10 minutes. It is also a central transit hub served by multiple bus and tram lines.
Visiting Time
Allow 15 to 30 minutes to view the monuments and walk across the plaza.
When to Visit
Daytime offers the clearest views of the architecture, while the glass victory column is lit up after dark. As an unsheltered open space, it is exposed to winter winds and direct summer sun. It fills with crowds during public holidays and concerts, but remains easy to cross on regular days.
