City Layout and Districts

The Hague is not a single concentrated center but a collection of distinct areas. To navigate it effectively, think of it in three main zones:

• The Center (Centrum): The hub for shopping, the Binnenhof (government buildings), and the Mauritshuis museum. This is the most walkable area.
• The Binckhorst and Industrial Zones: Transition areas moving toward the outskirts, characterized by modern architecture and creative hubs.
• Scheveningen: The coastal district. It is physically separated from the city center and requires a tram or bike ride to reach the beach and pier.

Transport and Arrival

From Schiphol Airport (AMS): The most direct route is via the NS train. Take a train toward Den Haag Centraal or Den Haag HS. Check your final destination to choose the correct station, as they are located on opposite sides of the city.

Getting Around: The city is flat and designed for cycling. Renting a bike is the most efficient way to move between districts. For longer distances, the HTM tram network is the primary mode of public transport, especially for trips to Scheveningen.

• Confusing the Stations: Many visitors arrive at Den Haag HS when their destination is near Den Haag Centraal. These stations are not adjacent; verify your hotel or attraction's proximity before exiting the train.
• Overlooking the Wind: Because of its proximity to the North Sea, the weather changes rapidly. Avoid relying on light clothing; a windproof jacket is essential even in spring.
• Expecting Amsterdam's Pace: The Hague is quieter and more formal. Do not expect the same density of tourist crowds, but do respect the quiet atmosphere around government offices.

For a first visit, prioritize the administrative and artistic core before heading to the coast.

• Priority: Start at the Binnenhof to see the seat of government, then visit the Mauritshuis to see Dutch Master paintings.
• Secondary: Spend an afternoon at the Peace Palace or exploring the shopping streets of the Centrum.
• Optional: If time permits, take the tram to Scheveningen for the beach. If you have already seen several Dutch coastal towns, this can wait until a second visit.
