How to Plan Your First Trip to Thessaloniki: Layout, Transport, and Orientation
August 29, 2026 · last updated · about 3 min read
City Layout and Key Districts
Thessaloniki slopes upward from the Thermaic Gulf to its ancient fortified hills. Orient yourself using three main zones:
- The Waterfront Strip: Centered on Aristotelous Square and anchored by the White Tower, this flat strip contains commercial avenues, sea views, and Roman monuments like the Rotunda.
- Ladadika: Adjacent to the passenger port, these restored cobblestone blocks house traditional tavernas and casual evening dining.
- Ano Poli: The elevated Upper Town features narrow winding streets, Byzantine stone walls, and surviving Ottoman architecture overlooking the bay.
Getting In and Moving Around
Thessaloniki Airport (SKG) links to downtown via express public buses (line 01X by day, line 01N by night) terminating at the main railway station. Taxis wait outside the arrivals hall.
Inside the central core, explore on foot. Most major historical sites sit within easy walking distance. Avoid renting a car for central sightseeing due to heavy traffic and severe street parking shortages.
First-Timer Pitfalls
- Expecting downtown beaches: The waterfront is an urban promenade for walking and dining, not swimming. Coastal swimming requires traveling south toward the Chalkidiki peninsula.
- Climbing to Ano Poli at midday: Uphill stone paths offer little midday shade. Ride a local bus or taxi up to the ramparts, then descend on foot.
Sensible First-Visit Priorities
First: Walk the seafront from Ladadika past Aristotelous Square to the White Tower, then inspect the Roman Agora and the Arch of Galerius along Egnatia Street. Head to Ano Poli in the late afternoon for sunset views over the gulf.
Can wait: Day trips to the royal tombs of Vergina or the beaches of Kassandra can wait until you have explored the historic core.
