The Palace of Galerius

The Palace of Galerius is an archaeological site in Thessaloniki featuring the remains of a Roman imperial residence commissioned by Emperor Galerius around 298-299 AD. Visitors go here to view ancient Roman foundations, walls, and mosaics located within the modern urban layout of the city.

Getting There

The site is located in the city center. It is accessible on foot from most central hotels and the main pedestrian areas. Depending on your starting point in the center, the walk typically takes between 5 and 15 minutes.

Duration of Visit

Allow approximately 1 to 2 hours to walk through the ruins and examine the architectural layout of the palace complex.

When to Visit

The site is outdoors, so visiting during the spring or autumn avoids the extreme heat of the Greek summer. Early morning or late afternoon is preferable to avoid direct sunlight. Like many central archaeological sites, it can get crowded during peak tourist seasons.

Nearby Attractions

Because of its central location, the palace can be combined with several other historical sites within walking distance:

  • Church of the Saviour: 0.2km
  • Arch of Galerius and Rotunda: 0.3km
  • Hagia Sophia: 0.3km
