Tashichho Dzong

Located on the west bank of the Wang Chhu River, this site is a Buddhist monastery and fortress. It serves as the center of Bhutan's government and previously functioned as the summer capital. Visitors go here to see the traditional Bhutanese architecture and the administrative heart of the country.

Getting There

The fortress is situated north of Thimphu's city center. It is accessible via a short taxi ride or a walk from the central areas, typically taking about 10 to 15 minutes depending on the starting point.

Allow approximately 1 to 2 hours to explore the exterior grounds and the surrounding architecture.

When to Visit

The site is generally less crowded in the early morning. Visitors should be aware that access to certain interior areas may be restricted based on government functions or religious ceremonies. Dress codes requiring long sleeves and trousers are standard for entry.
