How to plan your first visit to Trashigang, Bhutan

City Layout and Districts
Trashigang is the primary commercial and administrative center of eastern Bhutan. Rather than distinct urban districts, think of the town in two main zones: the Town Center and the Outskirts/Rural Perimeter.
- Town Center: A concentrated area of shops, government offices, and local eateries. Most essential services are walkable within this core.
- Outskirts: This area leads toward the surrounding hills and the critical pilgrimage sites, most notably the Gom Kora temple, which sits apart from the main commercial bustle.
Transport and Access
Arrival: The primary gateway is the Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport (GAU). Because this airport is located in India, travelers must arrange cross-border transit via road to enter Bhutan and proceed east to Trashigang.
Getting Around: Once inside Trashigang, the town center is small enough to navigate on foot. For trips to Gom Kora or surrounding villages, hire a local taxi. Public transport is limited, and private vehicles are the most reliable way to reach remote temple sites.
Common First-Timer Mistakes
Mistake: Attempting to walk to Gom Kora from the town center. While it seems close on a map, the terrain is steep and challenging.
Solution: Use a taxi to reach the temple entrance to save your energy for the actual pilgrimage circuit.
Mistake: Expecting a high density of English-language signage or international dining options.
Solution: Embrace local Bhutanese cuisine and carry a basic offline map of the region.
Suggested First-Trip Itinerary
For a first visit, prioritize the spiritual and cultural landmarks over commercial exploration:
- Priority One: Visit Gom Kora. This is the primary reason most travelers visit the region; allow a full morning to experience the temple and the surrounding landscape.
- Priority Two: Explore the local market in the town center to observe the regional trade and crafts of eastern Bhutan.
- Secondary: Local village walks and smaller shrines can wait until after you have visited the main temple complex.
