About the Site

Chan Chan was the capital of the ancient Chimú kingdom and is recognized as the largest pre-Columbian adobe city in South America. Located 5 km west of Trujillo, the site preserves large walled compounds, ceremonial courtyards, ancient irrigation reservoirs, and mud-brick walls carved with geometric and marine motifs.

Getting There

From central Trujillo, the site is reachable by taxi, local bus, or shared combi heading along the road toward Huanchaco. The 5 km journey generally takes 15 to 20 minutes depending on traffic.

Time to Allow

Plan to spend between 2 and 3 hours to walk through the main excavated Nik An sector and view the exhibits at the site museum.

When to Visit

Trujillo has a dry, temperate desert climate, so the ruins can be visited throughout the year. The morning or late afternoon is ideal for avoiding direct midday sun and group tour crowds. There is very little shade across the complex, so bringing water and sun protection is recommended.
