About the Museum

Opened in 1888 inside a former palace of the Bey, this national institution houses a major archaeological collection, including Roman mosaics and antiquities from across Tunisia. Travellers visit to view these historical pieces and examine the palace architecture, which features traditional tilework, carved plaster, and decorative ceilings.

Getting There

The site is located in the suburb of Le Bardo, approximately 4 kilometres west of central Tunis. The light rail (Metro Line 4) runs directly from downtown to the Bardo station, taking roughly 15 to 20 minutes. A taxi from the city centre takes about 15 to 25 minutes, depending on traffic.

Recommended Duration

Allow 2 to 3 hours to view the main exhibition halls and palace rooms.

When to Visit

Arrive in the morning to avoid the larger tour groups that tend to arrive around midday. Spring and autumn provide the most comfortable weather for travelling in Tunis.

Nearby Places to Combine

Several historic religious sites are located a short distance to the east towards the central city:

  • Ben Hmida Mosque (2.5km)
  • Mosque of Sidi El Ansari (2.6km)

  • Saheb Ettabaâ Mosque (2.9km)
