Old Castle of Lieto
What It Is
The Old Castle of Lieto is an ancient hillfort site situated on a rocky hill 55 meters above sea level. Visitors come to explore the archaeological ruins of the fortress and view the surrounding landscape and river valley from the elevated summit.
Getting There from Turku
Located northeast of central Turku, the area can be reached by car in approximately 15 to 20 minutes. Regional public buses run between Turku and Lieto, with stops near the access road to the hill.
Time to Allow
Plan for 1 to 2 hours on site. This provides sufficient time to walk up the trail to the crest, explore the archaeological area, and take the return path down.
When to Visit
Late spring through early autumn is the most comfortable period to visit, offering clear walking paths and good visibility. In winter, snow and ice make the rocky slopes slippery. The location rarely experiences heavy crowds, though visitor numbers rise slightly on sunny weekend afternoons.
