Getting Around Tyre

Tyre centers on two main areas: the coastal peninsula with the old port, and the inland Al-Bass ruins. Walking is best for the historic quarter, where narrow alleys prohibit vehicular traffic. For trips between the port and Al-Bass, shared taxis—known locally as service—are the primary choice. Hail cars with red commercial plates and state your destination. Private taxis win for direct travel with heavy luggage or after dark.

Transit Passes and Fares

There are no travel cards, transit passes, or unified tickets in Tyre. Transport is entirely cash-based. Pay drivers directly per trip using small bills, as drivers rarely carry change for large banknotes. A pass system does not exist and would not suit the decentralized network of independent drivers.

From Beirut Airport (BEY) to Tyre

The airport lies along the coast roughly eighty kilometers north of Tyre.

  • Private taxi or transfer: Lowest effort, fastest, high cost band. Direct coastal highway travel takes around an hour and a half outside peak congestion.
  • Shared minibus: High effort, slowest, low cost band. Involves taking a taxi from the airport to a southern Beirut transit hub, then boarding a southbound van.

Practical Notes

  • Operating hours: Shared vans and taxis run frequently during the day but wind down rapidly after sunset. Book private taxis for late arrivals.
  • Traffic: Southbound routes experience severe bottlenecks on Friday afternoons and weekend evenings, especially passing Sidon.
  • Luggage: Shared vans have minimal trunk room; drivers may require paying for an extra seat for large suitcases.
  • Accessibility: High curbs, uneven paving, and unpaved archaeological grounds make wheelchair navigation difficult without assistance.
