Understanding the City Layout

Tyre (locally known as Sour) centers on a peninsula formed when an ancient island was connected to the mainland. Divide the city into three zones: the Historic Peninsula, the Commercial Isthmus, and the Inland Mainland. The peninsula contains the working port, the Christian Quarter, and the coastal Al-Mina ruins. The mainland section to the east holds the separate Al-Bass archaeological park.

Arriving and Getting Around

Travelers arrive through Beirut-Rafic Hariri International Airport (BEY), roughly eighty kilometers north. Head south along the coastal highway via private taxi or intercity shared vans. Within Tyre, the peninsula is completely walkable. To reach the inland Al-Bass ruins from the coast, take a short shared taxi or private cab rather than walking through traffic corridors.

What First-Timers Get Wrong

  • Assuming all ruins sit together: Al-Mina and Al-Bass are two distinct sites separated by two kilometers. Plan transport between them instead of expecting a single park.
  • Skipping the old town: Look beyond the ancient ruins. The paved alleys of the Christian Quarter and the working harbor reveal Tyre's living community.
  • Ignoring the sun: Archaeological sites lack shade. Avoid touring the exposed Al-Bass hippodrome during peak afternoon hours.

A Sensible First-Visit Plan

Start early at the inland Al-Bass site to see the Roman necropolis and hippodrome before peak heat. Take a quick taxi to the peninsula's Al-Mina site to tour the coastal colonnades. Conclude on foot exploring the Christian Quarter and the harbor.
