About the Square

Sükhbaatar Square is the central public plaza in Ulaanbaatar. Named after the revolutionary hero Damdin Sükhbaatar, who died in 1923, it features an equestrian statue at its center and the Government Palace along the northern edge. Visitors go to see the focal point of Mongolia's modern history and observe local civic life.

Getting There

The plaza sits directly in the city centre. From central hotels and commercial streets, it is a 5- to 10-minute walk. Local buses and taxis stop along the streets surrounding the perimeter.

Time to Spend

Plan for 30 to 45 minutes to walk through the grounds, view the central monument, and see the surrounding civic architecture.

When to Visit

Summer offers comfortable weather for walking, though the open space provides no shade during midday. In winter, visit around noon for the warmest temperatures. The area draws large crowds during national holidays and public festivals, while ordinary weekday mornings are generally quiet.
