Overview

Uppsala Castle is a 16th-century royal fortress that played a key role in Swedish history. Today, the complex houses the county governor's residence and several museums. Travellers visit to see the historical architecture, explore the exhibitions, and view the city from the ridge.

Getting There

From Uppsala Central Station or the city centre, reaching the castle is a 10 to 15-minute uphill walk. Local buses also stop near the base of the hill, followed by a short walk up the paved paths.

Allow 1 to 2 hours if you plan to visit the indoor museums. A quick tour of the exterior courtyard and viewpoints takes about 30 to 45 minutes.

When to Visit

Late spring to early autumn provides the best conditions for exploring the outdoor grounds. The castle area sees moderate foot traffic during summer afternoons, but rarely feels congested. Mornings are the quietest.
