Royal Opera House

Overview

Designed by British architect Edward Middleton Barry and completed in 1866, the Royal Opera House was a prominent performance venue in Valletta. Following severe fire damage in 1873 and bombing in 1942, its preserved ruins and columns now function as an open-air performance space. Travellers visit to see the historical architecture and understand the capital's wartime past.

Getting There

The site is located directly inside Valletta's City Gate on Republic Street. Walking from the main bus station takes about two minutes, and it is a 5 to 10-minute walk from anywhere in the city centre.

Recommended Visit Duration

Set aside 15 to 30 minutes to view the ruins and architectural details. If attending a live performance, allow about 2 hours.

When to Visit

Go in the morning or late afternoon to avoid the heat and heavy pedestrian traffic, as the area near the city gate becomes crowded during midday. Evenings offer pleasant lighting on the stone columns.
