Victoria Lines

The Victoria Lines are a 12-kilometer defensive wall and series of fortifications that once divided the island of Malta into northern and southern sectors. Visitors go here to walk along the remaining military structures and observe the strategic layout used for the island's defense.

Getting There

To reach the fortifications from Valletta, the most practical method is by rental car or taxi, as the lines span a wide rural area. The journey typically takes 20 to 30 minutes depending on the specific section of the wall you intend to visit.

Duration of Visit

Allow 2 to 4 hours to explore a significant portion of the fortifications. The time spent depends on how much of the perimeter you choose to hike on foot.

When to Visit

The site is an open-air area with little shade, making it most comfortable during the spring and autumn months. Early morning or late afternoon is recommended to avoid the midday heat. The location does not typically experience the heavy crowds found in the city center.

Nearby Attractions

The fortifications can be combined with visits to other historical sites in the vicinity:

  • St Mark's Tower (1.6km)
  • Għallis Tower (3km)
  • Tal-Qadi Temple (3.1km)
  • Rotunda of Mosta (3.5km)
