Monument to the Heroes of Iquique

This war memorial is located in Plaza Sotomayor, situated directly in front of the Chilean Navy headquarters. It was built to commemorate the sailors who died during the naval battles of Iquique and Punta Gruesa during the War of the Pacific. Visitors go here to observe the sculptural work and learn about a significant period of Chile's military history.

Getting There

The monument is located in the heart of Valparaíso's flat commercial district. From the city centre, it is accessible by walking, as it sits within the primary urban hub. Depending on your starting point in the centre, the walk typically takes between 5 and 15 minutes.

Visit Duration

Since the memorial is an outdoor public monument located within a square, most visitors spend approximately 20 to 40 minutes viewing the site and reading the commemorative information.

When to Visit

The site is open to the public at all times. It can get crowded during national holidays or official naval ceremonies. Visiting during the morning or late afternoon avoids the midday sun, as the square has limited shade.
