Sotomayor Square

Sotomayor Square is the primary civic space in Valparaíso. It serves as a central gathering point characterized by its wide open layout and surrounding historic architecture. Visitors go here to see the Monument to the Heroes of Iquique, which commemorates sailors from the Battle of Iquique and the Battle of Punta Gruesa, and to observe the city's colonial and neoclassical buildings.

Getting There

The square is located within the flat coastal area known as the "Plan," which is the heart of the city centre. If you are staying in the downtown area, it is accessible via a short walk of 5 to 15 minutes. For those staying in the hills (cerros), you can reach the square by taking the local elevators (ascensores) or public transport down to the lower city.

Time Allocation

Allow approximately 45 to 90 minutes to walk across the square, examine the central monument, and view the facades of the surrounding government and historic buildings.

When to Visit

The square is open to the public at all times. It is most active during business hours when government offices are open. Like most central plazas, it can become crowded during national holidays or local civic events. Visiting during the morning or late afternoon provides more moderate temperatures.
