Key Transport Modes

Valparaíso is divided between flat coastal land (El Plan) and steep residential hills (cerros).

  • Ascensores (funiculars): Best for steep climbs between El Plan and hills like Cerro Alegre and Cerro Concepción, avoiding grueling stairways.
  • Trolleybuses: Historic electric buses operating on El Plan, ideal for flat downtown travel.
  • Tren Limache-Puerto: Coastal rail connecting the port to Viña del Mar. It avoids road traffic but does not climb the hills.
  • Colectivos and Micros: Shared taxis and buses serving winding routes up into the cerros.

Fares and Tickets

The city has no integrated transit card. The coastal train requires a reloadable card bought at stations. It is not accepted on micros, trolleybuses, or funiculars, which require exact cash. Travelers staying solely in the historic hills will not need the train card.

Santiago Airport (SCL) Transfers

  • Bus via Pajaritos: Airport shuttle to Pajaritos station, then an intercity coach to Valparaíso. Lowest cost band, moderate effort with one transfer.
  • Private transfer: Direct highway service to hill accommodations. Highest cost band, minimal effort, best for luggage.

Practical Transit Advice

Cobblestones and steep stairways make rolling luggage impractical in the hills; hail a taxi from the terminal on arrival. Funiculars and trolleybuses stop running by mid-evening, leaving colectivos for late uphill travel. Accessibility is very limited across hillside stairs and historic lifts. Coastal avenues clog during morning and evening rush hours, making rail the faster choice for trips to Viña del Mar.
