How to visit Vatican City for the first time
August 29, 2026 · last updated · about 4 min read
Understanding the Layout
Vatican City is a compact city-state enclosed by high walls. Rather than districts, think of it in three primary zones:
- St. Peter's Square: The grand entrance and public gathering area.
- St. Peter's Basilica: The central religious site and architectural focal point.
- The Vatican Museums: A vast complex of galleries and courtyards leading to the Sistine Chapel.
Arrival and Transport
The gateway is Leonardo da Vinci International Airport (FCO). Since Vatican City has no airport or train station, you must first enter Rome. From FCO, take the Leonardo Express train to Roma Termini, then use the Metro (Line A) to the Ottaviano or Cipro stations.
Once inside the Vatican walls, the city is entirely pedestrian. You will walk between all major sites. Note that there is no internal public transit system within the city-state itself.
Common First-Timer Mistakes
- Ignoring the Dress Code: Security strictly enforces a dress code. Shoulders and knees must be covered. Avoid sleeveless tops and short skirts or shorts, or you may be denied entry.
- Underestimating Queues: Waiting in line for the Basilica or Museums can take hours. Book timed-entry tickets online in advance to bypass the longest queues.
- Assuming it is a Typical City: It is a sovereign religious state, not a commercial hub. Do not expect a wide variety of shopping or nightlife inside the walls.
Suggested First-Trip Itinerary
For a first visit, prioritize these in order:
- The Vatican Museums and Sistine Chapel: Visit these first in the morning to avoid the heaviest crowds.
- St. Peter's Basilica: Explore the interior and the altar.
- St. Peter's Dome: Climb to the top for a panoramic view of the city-state and Rome.
The Vatican Necropolis and specific administrative offices can wait for a second, more specialized visit.
