Overview

The Arch of Septimius Severus is a monumental white marble triumphal arch located at the northwest end of the Roman Forum. Erected in 203 AD, it commemorates the Roman victory over the Parthians under Emperor Septimius Severus and his two sons. Travellers visit to study its surviving bas-relief carvings and architectural details.

Getting There

From central hubs like Piazza Venezia, the site is a 5- to 10-minute walk. If using public transport, the Colosseo metro station (Line B) is roughly a 10- to 15-minute walk from the entrance.

Visiting Time

Allow about 15 to 30 minutes to examine the reliefs and dedicatory inscriptions as part of your forum route.

When to Visit

Early morning or late afternoon provides cooler temperatures and fewer tour groups. The open-air site offers little shade, making midday visits hot in summer. Crowds peak during high season.
