Overview

The Domus Aurea consists of the underground remains of Emperor Nero's palace complex, built on the Oppian Hill after the Great Fire of Rome. Visitors go to examine the surviving brick vaults, fragments of ancient wall paintings, and ongoing archaeological excavations.

Getting There

From central transit hubs such as Termini Station, the site is reachable in roughly 15 to 20 minutes on foot, or by taking Metro Line B to Colosseo station followed by a 5-minute walk uphill through Colle Oppio park.

Time to Allow

Allocate 1 to 1.5 hours for the visit. Group walkthroughs move through a fixed sequence of subterranean chambers and active preservation zones.

When to Visit

The underground chambers remain damp and cool year-round, so bringing a light jacket is advisable regardless of the outside temperature. Because site capacity is strictly regulated to protect the ruins, entry slots fill quickly and require booking well in advance.
