Stephansplatz is the central public square of Vienna, anchored by St. Stephen's Cathedral. Travellers visit to see the cathedral's exterior, access surrounding pedestrian shopping streets, or use the square as an orientation point in the historic core.

Getting There

Located directly in the city centre, the square is reached on foot within 5 to 10 minutes from most central locations. It is also served directly by the Stephansplatz underground station on the U1 and U3 lines.

Time to Allow

Allow 20 to 45 minutes to walk across the plaza and view the architecture, or longer if you plan to browse the adjacent shops or sit at an outdoor cafe.

When to Visit

The plaza is a major pedestrian crossroads and gets crowded from late morning through early evening, especially on weekends and during the summer peak season. Arrive in the early morning for unobstructed views and easier walking conditions.
