City Wall of Vilnius

The City Wall of Vilnius is a defensive fortification constructed in the early 16th-century Lithuania to protect the city from attacks by the Crimean Khanate. Originally, the wall encircled the entire Old Town and featured nine gates and several artillery bastions. Today, only fragmented sections of the wall remain, allowing visitors to see the original masonry and trace the historical perimeter of the city's defenses.

Getting There

The remaining sections of the wall are located within the Old Town of Vilnius. Since they are integrated into the city streets, they are accessible on foot from the city centre. Depending on your starting point in the central district, it takes approximately 5 to 15 minutes to reach the primary remnants.

Visit Duration

Because the wall exists as scattered ruins rather than a single enclosed complex, visitors typically spend 30 to 60 minutes walking along the preserved segments and reading the informational plaques.

When to Visit

The ruins are outdoors and accessible throughout the year. Visiting during the morning or late afternoon avoids the peak pedestrian traffic of the Old Town. The area can become crowded during the summer tourist season and during local festivals.
