Vilnius Castle Complex

The Vilnius Castle Complex is a historical site located at the confluence of the Neris and Vilnia rivers. Built between the 10th and 18th centuries, it served as a primary defensive stronghold for Lithuania. Visitors go here to explore the architectural remains of the fortifications and learn about the military and political history of the region.

Getting There

The complex is located on a hill overlooking the city centre. It is accessible via a short walk from the central streets or by using the funicular that ascends the hill. The journey from the heart of the city typically takes about 10 to 15 minutes.

Duration of Visit

Allow approximately 2 to 3 hours to walk through the grounds and explore the various structures within the complex.

When to Visit

The site is open year-round, though the outdoor paths are most accessible during the spring, summer, and autumn. To avoid the largest crowds, visit during weekday mornings. The area can become crowded during peak tourist seasons and public holidays.

Nearby Attractions

Because of its central location, the complex can be combined with several other historical sites within walking distance:

  • Gediminas' Tower: 0km
  • National Museum of Lithuania: 0.1km
  • Palace of the Grand Dukes of Lithuania: 0.2km
