Pelican Point Lighthouse

Overview

Built in 1932, the Pelican Point Lighthouse is a 34-meter coastal landmark situated on the sandy spit that shields Walvis Bay. Marked by distinctive black-and-white horizontal stripes, the tower stands at the edge of the Atlantic Ocean. Travelers visit to view the historic maritime navigation structure and observe the surrounding remote coastline.

Getting There

The lighthouse is located at the tip of the peninsula, roughly 35 kilometers from the Walvis Bay city center. Reaching the site requires traveling via four-wheel-drive vehicle along soft sand tracks, taking about 45 to 60 minutes. Alternatively, boat excursions depart from the town waterfront across the bay.

Time to Spend

Allow 1 to 2 hours at the site, excluding transit. This provides enough time to walk along the shoreline, view the tower from various angles, and observe the surrounding marine environment.

When to Visit

Morning visits usually offer better visibility before dense coastal fog or strong afternoon winds roll in from the ocean. Due to its isolated geographic position, the location does not experience large crowds.

Nearby Attractions

Consider combining your trip with other area sites:

  • Bird Island (10.2km): A wooden platform built for guano collection, located along the coastline north of Walvis Bay.
