Štefano Castle
Štefano Castle
Located on the island of Ugljan, this fortress serves as a historical site reflecting multiple eras of Mediterranean defense. Originally established by the Byzantine Empire in the 6th century and later reconstructed by the Republic of Venice, the structure retains architectural elements from both periods. Visitors go here to observe the ruins of the fortifications and the strategic positioning of the site overlooking the sea.
Getting There
To reach the castle from Zadar city centre, take a ferry from the Zadar port to the island of Ugljan. Once on the island, the site is accessible via local roads. The total travel time depends on the ferry schedule and local transport, typically taking around one hour.
Visit Duration
Allow approximately one to two hours to explore the fortress grounds and the surrounding perimeter.
When to Visit
The site is best visited during the spring and autumn months to avoid the peak summer heat. Morning visits are recommended for better visibility and cooler temperatures. Because it is located away from the main urban hubs, it does not typically experience the same crowding as Zadar's city centre.
