Tippu Tip's House

Tippu Tip's House

Located in Stone Town, this historic residence belonged to Tippu Tip, a prominent 19th-century merchant and slave trader. Visitors go here to examine the architecture of the period and learn about the trade networks and social hierarchies that shaped Zanzibar's history. The house and its surrounding alleys provide a physical record of the city's colonial and mercantile past.

Getting There

The house is situated within the heart of Stone Town. Since the area consists of narrow pedestrian alleys, it is best reached on foot from the city centre. Depending on your starting point within the historic district, the walk typically takes between 5 and 15 minutes.

Duration of Visit

Allow approximately 45 to 90 minutes to tour the interior of the house and explore the immediate surrounding streets.

When to Visit

Visiting during the early morning or late afternoon is recommended to avoid the midday heat. Like many sites in Stone Town, it can become crowded when large tour groups pass through the narrow lanes. There are no specific seasonal closures, but weather is generally more stable during the dry seasons.
