Bajra Sandhi Monument

Bajra Sandhi Monument

Bajra Sandhi Monument is a monument to the struggles of the Balinese people throughout history. The monument is located in front of the Bali Governor's Office in Denpasar, Indonesia, on the island of Bali. The monument was built in 1987, and inaugurated by President Megawati Sukarnoputri on 14 June 2003.

What it is

Bajra Sandhi is a large monument in Denpasar commemorating episodes of Balinese history, from early kingdoms through the independence struggle. It stands on a wide plaza in front of the Bali Governor's Office, and its tiered, bell-shaped form (the name refers to a priest's ceremonial bell) makes it a recognizable landmark from a distance. Inside, a series of dioramas depicts historical scenes, and upper levels give views over the surrounding city. It suits travelers interested in Balinese history rather than temple architecture or art.

Getting there

It sits in central Denpasar, a short taxi or scooter ride from most parts of the city; expect roughly 15-30 minutes depending on traffic and where you're starting from. It's not within walking distance of the main tourist resort areas (Kuta, Seminyak, Ubud), so plan on driving.

How much time to allow

An hour or so is usually enough to walk around the plaza, view the dioramas, and climb to an upper level if open.

When to go

Mornings tend to be cooler and less crowded, which matters since much of the visit is outdoors on an open plaza with limited shade. Denpasar traffic can be heavy around midday, so factor that into travel time.

Nearby attractions

  • Bali Museum (2.3km) — a natural pairing for more Balinese history and culture.
  • Pura Maospahit and Le Mayeur Museum (both around 3.3km) — reachable in the same outing with a short drive, useful if building a half-day Denpasar itinerary.
