Bajra Sandhi Monument
What it is
Bajra Sandhi is a large monument in Denpasar commemorating episodes of Balinese history, from early kingdoms through the independence struggle. It stands on a wide plaza in front of the Bali Governor's Office, and its tiered, bell-shaped form (the name refers to a priest's ceremonial bell) makes it a recognizable landmark from a distance. Inside, a series of dioramas depicts historical scenes, and upper levels give views over the surrounding city. It suits travelers interested in Balinese history rather than temple architecture or art.
Getting there
It sits in central Denpasar, a short taxi or scooter ride from most parts of the city; expect roughly 15-30 minutes depending on traffic and where you're starting from. It's not within walking distance of the main tourist resort areas (Kuta, Seminyak, Ubud), so plan on driving.
