Holy Spirit Cathedral

Holy Spirit Cathedral

The Holy Spirit Cathedral also called Denpasar Cathedral is a religious building affiliated with the Catholic Church located in the city of Denpasar on the island of Bali in the south of the Asian country of Indonesia.

Holy Spirit Cathedral

Holy Spirit Cathedral, also known as Denpasar Cathedral, is the main Catholic church in Denpasar, the provincial capital of Bali. Most visitors to Bali are Hindu-temple-focused, so this is a stop for travellers interested in the island's minority Catholic community and its church architecture, which often blends European liturgical layout with Balinese decorative elements such as carved stone facades and local roof forms. It's a working parish church, not a museum, so treat a visit accordingly.

Getting there

The cathedral sits in central Denpasar. From the city centre it's a short taxi or scooter ride, typically well under 20 minutes depending on traffic. It's also close enough to nearby sights to walk between them if you don't mind Denpasar's heat and patchy sidewalks.

How long to stay

Most people spend 20–30 minutes here, enough to look at the exterior and step inside if it's open and no service is underway.

When to go

Go outside of Mass times, since the building is an active place of worship and you should avoid wandering in during services. Mornings tend to be quieter and cooler for walking around outside. This isn't a high-traffic tourist site, so crowding is generally not an issue.

Combine it with

  • Bajra Sandhi Monument (0.5km) – close enough to pair on foot, a large secular monument with a very different architectural focus.
  • Bali Museum (2.2km) – good for background on Balinese history and culture before or after.
  • Pura Maospahit (3.1km) – an old Hindu temple offering a contrasting religious site nearby.
  • Le Mayeur Museum (3.7km) – further out, worth combining if you're spending a fuller day in Denpasar.
