Arashiyama
아라시야마(嵐山 )는 일본 교토부 교토시의 지역이자 관광지이다. 국가사적 및 명승으로 지정되어 있다. 본래 지명으로는 니시쿄구 를 말하며, 좌안은 우쿄구 사가노에 있지만, 주로 사가노 지구를 포함한 도게쓰 교 주변 전역을 아라시야마라고 칭한다. 아라시야마는 벚꽃과 단풍 명소이다. 일본 벚꽃 명소 100선 및 일본 단풍 명소 100선에 선정되어 있다. 교토 시내 서쪽에 위치하고 있으며, 헤이안 시대에 귀족의 별장이 모여있는 지역이였으며 이후 교토의 대표적인 관광지가 되었다. 아라시야마의 중심부를 흐르는 가쓰라강에 가설되어 있는 도게쓰 교는 아라시야마의 상징이다.
What it is
Arashiyama is a district on the western edge of Kyoto, spread along the Ōi River with the wooded slopes of Mount Arashiyama behind it. Most visitors come for the bamboo grove — a path through tall, densely planted bamboo that filters the light overhead — and for the river itself, where you can walk the Togetsukyo Bridge or take a short boat ride. The area combines natural scenery with temples and gardens, and it's designated as a place of scenic beauty rather than built around a single monument.
Getting there
From central Kyoto, Arashiyama is reachable by train in about 20-25 minutes, either on the JR Sagano Line from Kyoto Station or the Randen (Keifuku) tram line from Shijo-Omiya. Both drop you within walking distance of the bamboo grove and river.
How much time to allow
Walking the bamboo grove itself takes only 10-15 minutes, but most people spend half a day in the area once temples, the riverside, and a stop for food or a boat ride are factored in.
When to go
The bamboo path gets crowded quickly once tour groups arrive, so early morning is noticeably quieter. Autumn foliage and spring cherry blossoms draw the largest crowds; if you're avoiding crowds, weekday mornings outside those seasons are easier going.
Combine it with
- Tenryū-ji Temple (1km) sits right at the entrance to the bamboo grove and is the easiest temple to pair with a walk through it.
- Saihō-ji Temple (2.5km) is a further walk or short ride, known for its moss garden.
- Katsura Imperial Villa and Ninna-ji Temple (both around 4.9km) are better treated as separate stops if you have extra time, since they're a bit far to combine on foot.
