Mount Sankaku

Mount Sankaku

What it is

Mount Sankaku is a low, forested hill on the western edge of central Sapporo, part of the same range of hills as Mount Moiwa. It's a quiet, unmanicured green space rather than a developed sightseeing spot — the appeal is walking trails through forest close to the city, with occasional views over Sapporo from higher points along the way.

Getting there

It sits in the Miyanomori/Ōkurayama area, a short taxi or bus ride from central Sapporo, roughly 20–30 minutes depending on traffic and where you start from. There's no train station at the base, so a car, taxi, or local bus connecting from the city centre is the practical option.

How much time to allow

A walk up and back, without rushing, takes somewhere around one to two hours depending on which trail you follow and how far up you go.

When to go

Go earlier in the day, since trails through forest lose light quickly in the afternoon, especially in autumn and winter when days are shorter. Snow can make paths difficult or unsafe in winter, so this is best treated as a spring-through-autumn outing. It isn't a heavily touristed site, so crowding isn't a major concern.

What to combine it with

The area has a few other attractions within easy reach: Araiyama and the Hongō Shin Memorial Museum of Sculpture, Sapporo are both about 0.8km away, the Miyanomori International Museum of Art, Sapporo is about 1.2km away, and Hokkaidō Jingū shrine is around 1.7km away. All are close enough to fold into the same half-day trip on foot or with a short taxi hop between stops.
