What it is

Hokkaidō Jingū is a Shinto shrine on the edge of Maruyama Park, established when Sapporo was first being settled and enshrining, among other kami, the spirit of Emperor Meiji, along with figures connected to Hokkaido's early exploration, such as Mamiya Rinzō. It's the main Shinto shrine for the island rather than a minor local one, with a wooded approach, a torii gate, and a shrine building set among trees that reflects Hokkaido's own settlement history rather than the older shrine traditions of Honshu.

Getting there

From central Sapporo (Odori or Sapporo Station), the shrine is reachable by subway on the Tozai Line to Maruyama-kōen Station, followed by a walk of around 15 minutes through the park. The trip from the station takes roughly 15-20 minutes, plus the walk.

Time to allow

Most visitors spend 30-45 minutes walking the grounds and visiting the main hall. Allow more time if combining it with a walk through the adjoining park or zoo.

When to go

The grounds are especially busy during cherry blossom season in late April and early May, when Maruyama Park's sakura draw large crowds, and again around New Year for hatsumōde visits. Weekday mornings tend to be quieter. Winter visits mean snow-covered paths, so waterproof footwear helps.

Nearby

  • Sapporo Maruyama Zoo (0.3km) - an easy add-on right next to the shrine grounds.
  • Maruyama Park (0.4km) - the surrounding parkland, good for a walk before or after.
  • Miyanomori International Museum of Art, Sapporo (0.5km) - a short walk further for an indoor stop.
  • Hongō Shin Memorial Museum of Sculpture, Sapporo (0.9km) - can be folded into the same outing if time allows.
