Sapporo Concert Hall

Sapporo Concert Hall

Sapporo Concert Hall Kitara (札幌コンサートホールKitara), is a municipal musical venue located in Nakajima Park, Sapporo, established in 1997, the building is owned by Sapporo City, The vineyard style music hall, known for having a huge organ built by Alfred Kern & Fils Manufacture D'Orgues in the main music hall. When Simon Rattle visited with the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra in 1998, he described the hall as "the best modern concert hall in the world".

What Kitara Is

Sapporo Concert Hall, commonly called Kitara, is the city's main venue for classical music, built inside Nakajima Park in 1997. The main hall uses a vineyard-style layout, with seating arranged in tiered blocks around the stage rather than facing it head-on, and it houses a large pipe organ built by the French firm Alfred Kern & Fils. It's worth visiting if you're attending a concert or if you're interested in the building and its acoustics; it's less of a draw if there's no performance on and you're just passing through, though tours or a look at the lobby and organ may still be possible.

Getting There

Kitara sits inside Nakajima Park, a short walk south of central Sapporo. From the Susukino or Odori area, it's roughly a 15-20 minute walk through the park, or a few minutes by subway to Nakajima-koen Station on the Namboku Line followed by a short walk.

Time to Allow

For a concert, plan for the length of the performance plus time to explore the lobby beforehand. If you're not attending a performance, a brief visit to see the exterior and grounds takes well under an hour.

When to Go

Timing mainly depends on the concert schedule rather than the season. Performance evenings and weekends can draw larger crowds around the entrance and lobby just before showtime, so arriving a bit early helps avoid the crush. The surrounding park is also pleasant to walk through, particularly when there's greenery or autumn color.

Combine It With

  • Nakajima Park (0.4km) — the park surrounding the hall, easy to combine with a visit before or after a concert.
  • Sapporo Gokoku Shrine (0.4km) — also within the park, a short walk away.
  • Sapporo Clock Tower (2km) and Nihon Kirisuto Kyodan Sapporo Church (2.2km) — both further out toward the city centre, worth pairing if you're making a longer day of central Sapporo sightseeing.
