Zoo Taipei
Taipei Zoo
What it is
Taipei Zoo is a large public zoo in Wenshan District, spread across hilly, forested terrain rather than flat grounds. It's organized into zones such as tropical rainforest, desert, and Formosan animal areas, and it also includes an insectarium and a separate Maokong Gondola station that some visitors combine with a hillside tea-house area outside the zoo grounds. Because the site is so spread out, expect a mix of walking paths, stairs, and shaded and open sections rather than a compact enclosure layout.
Getting there
The easiest way from central Taipei is the MRT Wenhu Line to Taipei Zoo Station, the line's southern terminus, which puts you right at the entrance. From areas like Taipei 101 or Xinyi District, this is roughly a 20-30 minute metro ride depending on your starting point and transfers.
How much time to allow
Given the size of the grounds, plan for at least half a day if you want to see the main animal zones without rushing. Visitors who also ride the Maokong Gondola or explore the insectarium in depth often turn it into a full-day outing.
When to go
Arriving earlier in the day helps you cover more ground before the heat builds, since much of the walking is uphill and outdoors. Weekends and school holidays tend to draw large family crowds, so a weekday visit is more comfortable if your schedule allows it. Summer afternoons in Taipei can be hot and humid, which is worth factoring in given how much walking is involved.
Combining with nearby sights
The zoo sits apart from Taipei's central sightseeing cluster, so it doesn't pair naturally with same-day stops near Taipei 101 (about 3.9km away), Taipei Nan Shan Plaza (3.8km), The Sky Taipei (4.1km), or Cathay Landmark (4.5km) unless you're prepared for additional transit time. It works better as a standalone half-day or full-day trip, potentially linked with the Maokong Gondola ride departing from the same station area.
