Lagune von Venedig
Venetian Lagoon
What it is
The Venetian Lagoon is the shallow, enclosed body of water between the Italian mainland and the Adriatic Sea, and it's what the city of Venice actually sits inside — built across a scatter of small islands within it. Beyond Venice itself, the lagoon holds mudflats, marshland, fish farms, and satellite islands, and it's the reason the city has canals instead of streets. A trip out onto the open lagoon shows a different side of the area than the dense historic center: open water, sandbanks, birdlife, and views back toward the city skyline.
Getting there
Since the lagoon surrounds Venice, you're effectively in it as soon as you're on the water. From the city center, vaporetto (water bus) lines reach the open lagoon and outer islands in anywhere from 15 minutes to over an hour depending on the destination; private boat tours and water taxis are also common ways to get out onto open water rather than just canals.
How much time to allow
A short vaporetto ride to get a sense of the open lagoon can take under an hour. If you want to explore lagoon islands or take a longer boat trip, plan for half a day or more.
When to go
Mornings tend to be calmer on the water, and boat traffic builds up through the day. Midsummer can mean crowded vaporetti and docks; the lagoon is also affected by "acqua alta" (seasonal high water), mainly in autumn and winter, which can disrupt boat schedules and flood low-lying areas.
Combine it with
- Sacca Fisola (2 km) — a quieter residential island edging the lagoon.
- Giudecca (2.8 km) — a longer island across the water from central Venice, reached by vaporetto.
- Il Redentore (3.1 km) — a church on Giudecca overlooking the lagoon.
- Gallerie dell'Accademia (3.1 km) — an art museum back on the main islands, useful for pairing a lagoon trip with time on land.
