Dusit Palace is a compound of royal residences in Bangkok, Thailand. The palace was constructed over a large area north of Rattanakosin Island between 1897 and 1901 by King Chulalongkorn. The palace, originally called Wang Suan Dusit or 'Dusit Garden Palace' (วังสวนดุสิต), eventually became the primary place of residence of the King of Thailand, including King Chulalongkorn, King Vajiravudh, King Prajadhipok, King Bhumibol Adulyadej and King Vajiralongkorn. Dusit Palace
Dusit Palace is the royal residential compound King Chulalongkorn built north of Rattanakosin Island at the turn of the 20th century, moving the monarchy out of the older Grand Palace. It's spread across gardens and lawns rather than packed tightly like the Grand Palace, with a number of separate royal buildings on the grounds, the best known being the golden teak Vimanmek Mansion. It suits travellers who want to see royal architecture without the density and heat of the old walled palace complex.
Getting there
From central Bangkok it's typically a 20–30 minute taxi or tuk-tuk ride, longer in heavy traffic. There's no direct BTS or MRT station at the compound, so most visitors arrive by taxi, ride-hailing app, or river boat combined with a short walk.
Time to allow
Plan for at least 2–3 hours if you want to see the main buildings and walk the grounds without rushing, since the compound is large and spread out with some distance between buildings.
When to go
Go earlier in the day to avoid the worst of the midday heat, since much of the visit involves walking outdoors between buildings. Mornings tend to be quieter than afternoons.
Combine it with
- Dusit Zoo is about 0.5km away, an easy add-on if you have time left in the day.
- Chitralada Royal Villa sits roughly 1km off, within walking distance for those not deterred by the heat.
- Chakraphong Mosque (2.2km) and Democracy Monument (2.3km) are further out and better reached by taxi or tuk-tuk if you want to continue on toward the old city.
